The rollout of Next Generation Access Networks (NGA) has become a strategic priority for the majority of developed regions. While governments and States are promoting National Broadband Plans to impulse the NGA rollouts, Europe is still lagging behind Asia and the U.S., and European incumbents and alternative operators are still reluctant to invest nationwide in the rollout of new networks. This paper presents an overview of European NGA rollout situation and explores, following a holistic approach, the main commercial, regulatory and public policy challenges for the rollout of NGA in Europe. If Europe does not want to fall further behind other regions in terms NGA readiness, governments, regulators and operators will need to work together and combine their efforts to foster investment in wide-scale NGA rollouts, thus overcoming the challenges of next generation broadband. | |
