Abstract
A free-surface, level-set based method for simulating Newtonian and non-Newtonian ?ows is presented. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a second order accurate semi-Lagrangian scheme, evolving the level-set function along the characteristic curves of the ?ow. Marker particles may be added to correct the shape of the free surface, according to the Lagrangian Particle Level-Set method; viscous and surface tension e?ects are taken into account as well. For non-Newtonian ?ows, stochastic particles carrying the molecular information are placed over the polymeric domain, their internal degrees of freedom being computed by a Predictor-Corrector scheme. The Fi- nite Element Method is used for discretization purposes, employing P2/P1/P1-isoP2/P1 polynomial approximations for velocity, pressure, level set function, and polymer stress tensor, respectively. A number of benchmark problems are considered for Newtonian and non-Newtonian ?uids. Results are compared with those of the literature.
