Abstract
A replica of the 16th Century ship Victoria was built for the Expo92 in Seville (Spain). The original ship was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe from 1519 to 1522. The Victoria was part of a Spanish expedition composed by five Spanish carracks with 243 men and commanded by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Only the Victoria, commanded by Captain Juan Sebastián Elcano, and with only 18 survivors, came back to the same port on 8 September 1522 after traveling 42,000 miles. 14 years after the Spanish Exhibition in 1992, the Victoria was restored and fitted to repeat the journey that had been completed five centuries ago. This study describes the condition assessment of the carrack?s wood structure in order to evaluate the possibility that the ship could support a long journey to Japan. These safety conditions were assessed by using AutoCAD and a Resistograph® device that can detect hidden cracks and cavities in structural lumber combined with an acoustic impact hammer
