Descripción
Cultural heritage is a complex and diverse concept, which brings together a wide domain of information. Resources linked to a cultural heritage site may consist of physical artefacts, books, works of art, pictures, historical maps, aerial photographs, archaeological surveys and 3D models. The European initiative INSPIRE has recognised that the information about cultural heritage should be part of a Spatial Data Infrastructure. In this case, a protected site was defined as any ?designated or managed area within a framework of international, community and member states legislation to achieve specific conservation objectives.? In contrast, ICOMOS (International Council of Monuments and Sites), an international non-governmental organisation of professionals dedicated to the conservation of the world's historic monuments and sites, defines a cultural heritage site as ?a place, locality, natural landscape, settlement area, architectural complex, archaeological site, or standing structure that is recognised and often legally protected as a place of historical and cultural significance.? The aim of this research is to demonstrate how the complexity of cultural heritage resources can be dealt with by examining them from a broad perspective. Towards this end, a metadata visualisation approach is proposed for creating a formal structure for an explicit representation of the connections and voids between the current used metadata standards in the cultural-heritage domain (e.g. Norma ISO 19115, Dublin Core, AAT, CDWA, CCO, DACS, MARC, MoReq, MODS, MuseumDat, TGN, SPECTRUM, VRA Core and Z39.50). Our approach is based on the previous research work on metadata visualisation proposed by Riley (2010) and Fairbairn et al. (2001). Visual representations are used for creating hierarchies among the metadata specifications of cultural heritage resources and their different interpretations, as well as their dependencies. The outcomes are revealing the need to take into account the domain of cultural heritage resources in INSPIRE.
