NEW CLASSIFICATION OF TRACTORS ACCORDING TO THEIR ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Five years ago, tractors sold in the Spanish market were classified according to their energy efficiency (Gil-Sierra et al., 2007). The classification established five categories taking into account the fuel consumption of the engine and the efficiency of the transmission measured following the OECD test code. In order to have a classification similar to other machines made by the Spanish Instituto de Diversificación y Ahorro Energético (IDAE), like passenger cars, refrigerators, washing machines, etc., the new tractors classification has been enlarged to seven categories. In the last years, several tractor engines have adopted the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce the amount of exhaust pollutant emissions. In this new classification, the consumption of diluted urea by the SCR system is also taken into account in the calculation of the energy consumption of each tractor. These changes have been introduced in the computer program which performs the classification of tractors in Spain.
