International airports are struggling to succeed in a highly competitive market. New entrants have entered strong in the league tables with different business models, creating new hubs and competing with traditional leading airports. Also consolidation and privatization has taken place where key infrastructure and sovereign funds have entered in their shareholder structure. In this paper we research about the key factors that have an influence on their value creation. We have conducted this research in two different phases. First, we have analysed the influence of the key factors, that is to say, governance, airlines involved, revenue structure, passengers, and strategy. In a second stage, using complementary data, we have analysed, using fuzzy-set QCA, the influence of the aspects mentioned above in terms of EBITDA Margin. Research has focused in the main airports placed in United Kingdom, where privatization started before and it is more implemented. The chosen factors to analyse were diversification, performance and airport type. We conclude that the diversification does not play a dominant role in large airports. However airport type and performance, economic and operational, are relevant. Future research could be aimed at analysing effect of regulation, competition and geopolitical factors. | |
