Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) is a technique, recently introduced by Schmid [1], suitable to capture flow dynam- ics and coherent structures based on Koopman modes. However, DMD is sensitive to the collected data and the transient flow trajectory. DMD of complex transient dynamics involves numerical difficulties, including robustness and accuracy. This is (among other reasons) because while DMD describes the flow dynamics as a linear combination of exponential terms, in transient flow the data may contain non exponential behaviour. This fact is very clearly illustrated by Bagheri [2], who performed a DMD analysis in the cylinder wake near the onset of unsteadiness. Besides, DMD is an Arnoldi-like algorithm that can be implemented in several ways that may not produce explicitly the same results, especially in the pres- ence of errors and in systems exhibiting concentrated spatio-temporal complexity. A deeper discussion about the exposed issues in regard to DMD will be presented at the time of the conference. The proper DMD algorithm will be selected and some new ingredients will be added, in order to improve the current DMD descriptions of transient dynamics. | |
