Descripción
Tungsten coatings are often used for tribological applications, especially for those at elevated temperatures due to its high melting point and good wear resistance. Nevertheless, the study is often focused in the behavior of tungsten carbides for the design of hard components such as cutting tools, drill bits, and abrasives. Few research has been published in other tungsten products such as tungsten based alloys and composites with other refractory metals, whilst their mechanical properties have been widely studied for energy purposes (i.e. ITER). In order to fill this gap, this research investigates the tribological behavior of pure commercial tungsten based materials at various temperatures, discussing the major mechanisms of wear in those materials and the suitable relationships between wear and mechanical properties. The tribological characterization of these materials have been performed in a reciprocating wear testing machine, under normal loads between 10 and 20 N and test frequencies of 20 Hz. As counterbody, it has been used a ball of high purity alumina (99.7%) with controlled initial roughness (< 1 micron), and 3 mm in diameter. The experiment temperatures were gradually increased in steps of 200 °C, from room temperature to 600 °C. This upper limit temperature is marked by the occurrence of oxidation processes, which strongly degrade the material, and thus greatly accelerate the deterioration in such tests. During testing the friction coefficient and the rut depth was measured continuously. A posteriori mass loss, the area of material loss in the central section of the trace (by profilometry), was determined. Additionally, deformation and fracture mechanisms on the microscale linked to wear were examined by scanning electron microscopy.
