Within the Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) systems, the use of semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) elements presents a promising energy saving potential based on the close relationship existing between these multifunctional systems and the overall building energy balance. This work analyses the global energy performance (heating, cooling and lighting loads as well as the electricity generation) of five double glazing STPV elements over different window-to-wall ratios. Based on detailed spectral data experimentally undertaken and carried out using a package of specific software tools, the dynamic simulations show that the energy saving potential provided by the STPV solutions could reach up to 59% compared to the solar control reference glass.
