| The two main pests that threaten the production in horticultural crops in Almeria (South-Eastern Spain), which is the most important vegetable crop area in the country, are the tobacco whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) and the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot) (Acari: Phytoseiidae), a generalist predatory mite, is a key biological control agent of whiteflies and helps in diminishing thrips populations together with Orius laevigatus (Fieber) (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae). Plant strengtheners are modern agricultural products that boost the plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Their legal situation is not clear in Spain. Initially they were considered as fertilizers, afterwards as other means of phytosanitary defence, commercialized just by inscription and notification to the Ministry of Agriculture, and more recently as plant protection products. Besides, there is a lack of ecotoxicological scientific research about them. In this study, we have evaluated the lethal and sublethal effects of four products and some of their combinations that are or have been commercialized under the denomination of plant strengtheners in Spain. Females of A.swirskii were exposed to fresh residues when the products were applied to pepper (Capsicum annuum L. (Solanaceae)) leaf surface according to the IOBC standards for extended laboratory. IOBC toxicity ratings were obtained following different approaches and the advantages and disadvantages are taken into consideration. Finally, the toxicity of these plant strengtheners was compared in relation to other plant protection products that are currently registered in Spain and their legal situation discussed. | |
