CPV has been one of the most promising solutions for the competitive solar electricity production market. These systems make use of high-efficiency triple-junction solar cells (with a current maximum efficiency of >44%) that require advanced optics designs to perform at high concentration (>500), to reduce the high-cost cells usage. Minimizing energy cost ($/kWh) is necessary for the success of CPV. The key to minimizing this cost is an efficient, robust (high manufacturing tolerance/acceptance angle), low cost optical design coupled with the highest possible efficiency solar cells. In order to be more competitive with other technologies (PV, Wind, etc.), new CPV approaches have been explored that have the potential to achieve a higher efficiency than this traditional approach. | |
