This paper proposes a new user-centric management architecture to facilitate the creation of network management applications that provide residential users an easy way to manage their own networks. Residential network management applications are split in two components: a frontend handling user interaction and running in the user's preferred device (PC, laptop, smartphone); and a ack-end built on top of both the Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm and the Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) paradigm. The initial focus is improving the usability of the management tools and facilitating the provision of new services on the residential network. However, the paper also discusses how the proposed architecture needs to be extended to address open issues such as how to better integrate the virtualized network functions at the ISP infrastructure, or how to achieve elasticity by using SDN/NFV on the access network. | |
