Descripción
Edge servers are used in web commerce applications to improve the user experience. In traditional approaches only static contents is stored at edge servers (close to clients) whilst the dynamic contents is stored in a remote centralized server. With this approach the latency of client requests that need dynamic data is quite high. The allocation of replicas of the dynamic data close to clients (i.e., at the edge servers) can improve the latency, and therefore the user experience. The challenge with this approach is to keep the copies of the data up-to-date (consistent) and the same time improve the user experience. While database replication has been widely studied in the context of LANs, little attention has been paid to replication in WANs. In order to achieve low response time and consistency in a WAN the number of messages among replicas has to be reduced to the minimal. But even having a single message per transaction cannot be affordable. In this paper we present the evaluation of an autonomic controller for partial replication. The main idea is to avoid full replication (i.e., all sites store all data) which may become a bottleneck. By having replicas of the data in some sites, the communication and CPU consumption is reduced. Replicas must be close to the clients therefore, the response time is reduced. However, knowing in advance which data is accessed at each site cannot be the case. An autonomic controller monitors which data is accessed at each site in order to place replicas of the data close to clients. Our evaluation shows that partial replication improves the performance of full replication and the use of the autonomic controller allows quick reconfiguration in case of changes in the data access pattern.
