The possibility of enhancing photovoltaic efficiency in single-absorbent cells by using intermediate band (IB) materials was proposed in the last decade . With such IB (that should be partially filled), absorption of two sub-bandgap energy photons leads to electron excitation across the full bandgap, allowing in principle to extend the energy range of utilizable photons in the solar spectrum and to increase the cell photocurrent without decreasing its photovoltage. This possibility, that could improve also the efficiency of photocatalysts and of several optoelectronic devices, has not been realized to date in any single compound. | |
