Descripción
In the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, the tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is the most cultivated and profitable crop. In the last decade, new technology has been incorporated; such as: plastic coverings, fertirrigation and hydroponics. The hydroponic crops require adequate substrata and nutrient solutions specific to each type of crop. In this investigation, we evaluated the effect of two substrata, sand and coconut fibre, on growth, development, production and fruit quality of two tomato genotypes (Loreto and SUN 7705) in an experiment under hydroponic and greenhouse conditions. For both varieties, the coconut fibre substratum in comparison with the sand, provoked a better response to the variables: height and thickness of the plant, number of bunches per plant, number of fruits per bunch, total weight of the fruit, dry matter (roots, leaves, stems and fruits) and dry matter total. However, for the variables of fruit quality, (polar and equatorial diameter, colour, pH, Brix grades, titratable acidity and direct sugars total), there were no significant differences. The most outstanding treatment was coconut fibre with the SUN 7705 genotype, principally for the following variables: total weight of the fruit and dry matter total.
