Abstract: An automatic inspection system for large three-dimensional objects is esp. applicable to nuclear installations to carry out a series of inspections of fuel elements without coming into contact with them with the type of fuel element and the desired dimensional inspection plan previously determined. The system is capable of working in extremely radioactive environments, in the primary circuit pond of the nuclear installation. The system is novel in that it comprises a mechanical system (2) for support and positional control of a directional illumination system (3) mounted symmetrically relative to a digital imaging system (4) of the object or fuel element (1) to be inspected which pivots relative to the imaging system so as to permit the taking of images of this object or fuel element at different external positions. These images are digitally inspected and processed to obtain relative measurements of the object or fuel element in relation to the position of the images. The system comprises a computer (5) as well as a video receiver (6) and a card (5') for receiving relayed digitally treated images. The illumination system (3) permits a visual enhancement of the angular edges of the object or fuel element (1) which are measured in each image following the established inspection plan. The system also has a calibration structure of known dimensions located next to the object or fuel element for dimensional calibration of the previously digitally-treated images in the view of obtaining coordinates of the images in relation to actual measurements. | |
