This paper presents a software tool developed at the Technical University of Madrid to identify and quantify driver vision impairment problems originated by sun glare and to facilitate the design of countermeasures to prevent potential safety hazards caused by these situations. The computer program is based in a methodology previously developed at the University to determine the days and times of the year when sun glare may impair drivers¿ vision on a particular road section depending on its geographical location, the geometric design of the road, and the physical characteristics of its environment. The computer program has been implemented to represent in cylindrical charts the intervening variables and to perform the calculations to determine the times and days in which drivers will experience sun glare vision impairment. The resulting software tool has already been applied in Spain in several studies of singular locations in which sun glare could pose a safety hazard, including tunnel exists, freeway entrance ramps and intersection approaches. | |
