The European Union seeks to promote the use of biofuels as substitutes for diesel or gasoline for transport in order to fulfill commitments on climate change, security of supply and promoting renewable energy sources. To this end, Directive 2003/30/EC provides that before the end of 2010 a minimum of 5.75% biofuels in all petrol and diesel sold for transportation purposes should be consumed. This article outlines the possible use of hydrogen as an alternative to fossil fuels and biofuels from both the technical, economic and environmental perspectives in Spain. Key words: hydrogen, biofuels, renewable energies, fuel cells, automotion | |
