The Agricultural Systems Group (AgSystems) is a consolidated group at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, made up of 11 researchers at various levels - 7 senior researchers, 1 post-doctorate and 3 doctoral students ¿and 1 technician from the HTSE for Agronomy, Food and Biosystems. We are also part of the Agricultural and Environmental Risk Management Research and Study Centre (CEIGRAM), which is a mixed research centre at the UPM, and two clusters at the Moncloa IEC ¿Global Change and New Energy, and Agri-food and Health. We also take part in two educational innovation groups ¿AgSystems and Árbol¿ and the Cooperation Group, which is a part of the Centre for Innovation in Technology for Human Development (itd-UPM).

AgSystems
Structure: Research Groups
Our research focusses on studying agricultural and farming systems and their relationship with the environment. The end goal is to design strategies, or alternatives, that enable sustainability to be maintained in farming systems under current and future conditions. To do so, our group carries out research projects based on field testing and the use of mathematical simulation models.
The main lines of research are as follows:
- Water and nitrogen management in agricultural systems
- Impact and adaptations to climate change and variability in farming systems. Associated uncertainties.
- Modelling agricultural systems
- Modelling in agricultural systems
- Uncertainties associated to impact projections of climate change in cropping systems. Adaptations.
- Water and nitrogen management in agricultural systems
The AgSystems group's research work is carried out by taking part in research projects, whether basic or applied, based on field testing and the use of mathematical simulation models. AgSystems' members take part in competitive European, national and regional projects. The group coordinates the SIRENA Network, which belongs to the National R&D Plan's excellence networks and focusses on improving efficiency in the use of nitrogen in Spanish agriculture. We take active part in the development and assessment of farming models within the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) platform. The group is a member of the CEIGRAM taking part in analysing risks and improving the design of agricultural insurance in a context of climate variability and global heating.
The group works on different services with private companies and public entities. Entering into contracts and cooperation agreements enables knowledge transfer from the University to the production sector, or the interested sectors of society.
In the area of cooperation, AgSystems collaborates on agricultural reactivation projects and consolidation amongst universities with curriculum and mobility for students and professors. It also takes an active part in the Spanish Agricultural Research for Development Network.
In the area of educational innovation, we have developed tools that help to boost the use of active teaching methodologies in the area of Plant Production.
