The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid  will launch the Master in Advanced Motorsport Engineering (MIAM-UPM) in October 2026, a new postgraduate programme designed to train engineers specialised in the development, analysis and optimisation of competition vehicles and high-performance technological systems. The programme is presented as the first master’s degree in motorsport promoted by Spanish public universities, responding to the growing international relevance of Madrid as a hub connected to engineering, innovation and motorsport.

With a total workload of 90 ECTS, the MIAM-UPM combines advanced technical training, multidisciplinary specialisation, practical laboratory work, external internships and a Master’s Thesis focused on real industrial application. Its structure has been designed with a strong practical orientation: 41 ECTS, equivalent to 45.6% of the programme, are devoted to applied learning, projects, internships and professional experience.

Among its main academic areas are vehicle dynamics, aerodynamics, powertrain systems, instrumentation and telemetry, composite materials, simulation, performance strategy and data-driven engineering tools. In addition, approximately one third of the programme content is directly linked to advanced simulation, data analysis, artificial intelligence and performance strategy, all of them core technologies in contemporary motorsport disciplines such as Formula 1, Formula E and the WEC.

One of the main distinguishing features of the MIAM-UPM is its combination of academic excellence and professional immersion. The programme is supported by the academic strength of UPM, while also integrating external professionals currently active in motorsport and advanced engineering: 38.5 ECTS are delivered by UPM faculty and 25.5 ECTS by external lecturers, creating a balance between rigorous university teaching and direct exposure to current industry practice.

Another key differential factor is its close link with the sector. The programme has been developed with the support of an External Advisory Board composed of engineers and senior professionals with international experience in motorsport and advanced engineering, helping ensure that the curriculum, methodology and professional orientation remain aligned with the real needs of the industry. This connection is reinforced through case-based teaching, technical projects, simulation, data analysis and multidisciplinary teamwork.

The MIAM-UPM is aimed at graduates with a technical background, especially those from mechanical, industrial, automotive and aerospace engineering, as well as from related technical fields.

How to apply

Applications to the MIAM-UPM follow a progressive admission process consisting of submission of the application, assessment by the Academic Committee and finally enrolment and seat reservation.

As a general rule, applicants must provide a university degree in engineering or related technical fields, together with their academic transcript, curriculum vitae and motivation letter.

Prospective students who would like personalised information about the programme, admission process, academic structure or professional opportunities may contact the coordination team at master.motorsport@upm.es or use the contact form available on the official programme website. T
