Photonic and Biophotonic Optics Group (GOFB)

Our work covers the entire value chain, from basic research and technology to demonstrating and creating prototypes, the majority of which are based on detecting proteins, virus and important biomarkers, such as the Biochip-KIT, without the need to have to use chemical processing like the most commonly used classic techniques do.

Our focus is also global, as we do not just develop biochips, but also the way of reading the information they generate with optical reading systems that are a key aspect for the majority of in vitro detection applications. Recently, in collaboration with relevant groups, we have also been developing systems for immobilising cells with the aim of developing systems that enable experimentation on cells without using animal systems.

The group takes part in projects that are highly focussed on basic research and the application of industrial development, with projects funded by national and international agencies and also directly by industry. We also take part in outreach work to bring our work to society and, in particular, bring science and technology to young people, to encourage scientific vocation. Finally, in 2010 the group created BIOD, a technology-based business that industrialises and commercialises part of the technology developed by the group
