Life Cycle, Product Carbon Footprint and Organisational Carbon Footprint Analysis reports are carried out in scopes 1, 2 and 3 using conventional bottom-up techniques (Process Analysis) and unconventional techniques ¿top-down (Input-Output Analysis and Satellite Imaging).

Life Cycle, Product Carbon Footprint and Organisational Carbon Footprint analysis are complementary tools for developing sustainability metrics. These services enable nature to be put at the centre of our decisions, while also generating competitive advantages for public procurement, and justification for new production of communications patterns, under a strict social and environmental responsibility strategy.

UPM¿s participation ensures that the latest scientific and technological advances are applied to these services. The results, therefore, enable a deep understanding of the environmental impact of the system under study to be reached.


Description of the services offered

Carbon footprint quantification is key to developing actions for reduction and final offsetting. To do so, depending on the subject of the study, the most recently approved standards will be followed:


  • Life Cycle Analysis
    using OpenLCA and/or Simapro Software with European Commission databases (ELCD Database) or Ecoinvent 3.8. The ISO 14040 and 14044 standards and specific Product Category Rules are applied, in such a way that Environmental Product Declaration (ISO 14025) certification can be achieved. Depending on the purpose and scope, system limits and the methodology for profiling impacts are defined.

  • Product Carbon Footprint
    in application of ISO 14067 on Product Carbon Footprint. The methodology described above will be followed, centring on impact assessment in the climate change category. To do so, the most up-to-date databases, which give better representativeness to the study, will be used. By way of innovation, factors arising from multi-regional input-output analysis can be used for better value chain profiling.

  • Organisational Carbon Footprint
    in application of ISO 14064 (its recommendation ISO 14069) and the future ISO 14068 on Carbon Neutrality. An analysis is carried out for 3 scopes (now categories) of carbon footprint, the product of which will generate the registration report on the Ministry Carbon Footprint Register up to the complete response to the GRI Sustainability Report (Series 305) and the CDP questionnaire.

Needs requested and applications

The service covers the need to provide rigorous information given the increase in indicators and content to be drawn up for sustainability reports and non-financial product and organisation information reports. It is also intended to give businesses the ability to generate atmospheric pollutant information that can be used in product verification processes and organisation seeking seals of environmental quality.


Differential skills

The UPM Carbon Footprint Team consists of professors and researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) with extensive knowledge about climate change and Carbon Footprints. The Team has been carrying out various environmental sustainability studies and activities from numerous perspectives since 2010. From the beginning, its work has been carried out with an undertaking to values of responsibility, quality and commitment.


Previous references for provision of services

The Carbon Footprint services have been carried out in many public and private fields. The graduate professionals are currently giving huge value to big companies, such as Banco Santander, Técnicas Reunidas, Prosegur, Bluewolf, Elecnor, Ineco, Tragsa, and Agresta Coop., amongst others. Given the research nature of the team, much of the work carried out is published in research journals, where the contractor has given permission for the results to be disseminated.
