Frequently asked questions

Admitted students without previous studies at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid must pay their Tuition Fee Deposit in the prescribed dates in the Calendar (only at first and second admission term). Admission will be canceled for those admitted students who do not complete the process on time.

The amount of the Tuition Fee Deposit is 250 euros, which will later be deducted from the amount of the enrollment. There will be no refund in case of not complete the enrollment.

The procedure to pay the Tuition Fee Deposit would be:

  1. Request an UPM email account
  2. Access the Self-enrolment platform (Gestión de Recibos) to pay, just online with bank card.

  • MSc degree programme: MSc degree programmes aim to provide students with advanced, specialized or multidisciplinary training targeting an academic or professional specialization or an introduction to research work.

The procedure for students wishing to join an accredited MSc degree programme is:

1. Apply at the UPM website for the MSc degree programme that you would like to take:

  • First read the eligibility requirements for the programme that you would like to take and the documents required to complete this process on the self-enrolment page.
  • You will receive an email with confirmation that your application was submitted successfully.

2. Letter of admission to the programme:

  • You will receive an acceptance or rejection email from the UPM notifying you whether or not have been accepted as a prospective accredited MSc degree programme student.
  • You will then receive an acceptance or rejection email from the MSc degree programme secretary's office notifying you of whether or not you have been admitted as a student of the respective programme subject to submission of the required documents and enrolment (you can request your letter of admission from the programme secretary's office as of when you receive the acceptance email).

Check whether or not you have been admitted by consulting the lists of admitted students or the UPM application website.

3. Enrol in person at the School registrar's office or online via the Self-enrolment web environment:

  • If you enrol online, please read the enrolment instructions carefully (once you have received the letter of admission from the programme secretary's office, you have to set up a UPM student account and follow the specified procedure).
  • Students that enrol online will have to submit the original documents at the Registrar's Office of the School or Faculty to which they were admitted no later than two months as of enrolment. Enrolment will be cancelled and void if these documents are not submitted.

    1. Are obliged to submit a Level B2 English language proficiency certificate, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

      If you are applying for the MSc in Teacher Training, the required accreditation is Level B1 in a foreign language.

    2. Are required to submit the Resolution on the recognition / Homologation of your degree according to which you are eligible for the UPM master's degree program. This recognition is issued by the Spanish Ministry of Universities.

  4. You must pay their Tuition Fee Deposit in the prescribed dates in the Calendar in case of being admitted in the First and Second Term (currently not necessary others terms or periods). Admission will be canceled for those admitted students who do not complete the process on time.

    The amount of the Tuition Fee Deposit is 250 euros, which will later be deducted from the amount of the enrollment. There will be no refund in case of not enrollment.

  2. If you do NOT have completed your Bachelor's degree.
    According to the UPM Enrollment Regulations, you can apply (In no case can the Master's degree be obtained without having previously completed the Bachelor's degree):
    1. Student Pledge for Completion of Studies.
    2. Official Transcript of records of your degree stating credits passed and credits necessary for your Bachelor's degree.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Students who do NOT have completed their Bachelor's degree can apply, and pay their Tuition Fee Deposit and enrollment on a conditional basis. They must meet any of the following requirements before September 30:

  1. Accredited degree certificate issued by Spanish university or proof of having applied for diploma.

  2. Official Transcript of records of your degree stating the credits passed and the credits necessary for your Bachelor's degree. , And it can be reliably verified that only the Final Degree Project (TFG).

  3. UPM students in Programas Académicos de Recorrido Sucesivo (PARS) who have a maximum of 30 credits remaining, including the TFG, to obtain the Bachelor's degree.

They must prove their compliance before September 30 by sending the required documentation to tramitacion.master.oficial@upm.esOtherwise, admission, and enrollment if any, will be cancelled.

 

  1. Students applying for an accredited master's degree listed in Appendix I (included any Master's degree offering professional certification: MSc in Aerospace Engeneering; MSc in Agro-Engineering; MSc in Architecture; MSc in Civil Engineering; MSc in Mining Engineering; MSc in Forestry Engineering; MSc in Industrial Engineering; MSc in Naval and Oceanic Engineering; MSc in Telecommunications Engeneering. Or any dual program with them) are obliged to submit a Level B2 English language proficiency certificate, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

    If you are applying for the MSc Lower and Upper Secondary Teacher Training, the required accreditation is Level B1 in a foreign language.

  2. Admitted students without previous studies at the UPM must pay their Tuition Fee Deposit in the prescribed dates in the Calendar in case of being admitted in the first and second term (not necessary for the rest of the terms. Admission will be canceled for those admitted students who do not complete the process on time.

    The amount of the Tuition Fee Deposit is 250 euros, which will later be deducted from the amount of the enrollment. There will be no refund in case of not complete the enrollment.

    The procedure would be:
    a) Request an UPM email account
    b) Access the Self-enrolment platform (Gestión de Recibos) to pay, just online with bank card.

 

Eligibility for accredited MSc programmes

To be eligible for admission to an accredited MSc programme, students shall have to hold an accredited Spanish or international university degree issued by a higher education institution in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) entitling the holder to admission to master's programmes in the issuing country.

For students from Spanish universities, the UPM Enrollment Regulations allow them to request conditional application (In no case can the Master's degree be obtained without having previously completed the Bachelor's degree) by attaching a Student Pledge for Completion of Studies, and an Official Transcript of records of your degree stating the credits passed, the credits necessary for your Bachelor's degree, and it can be reliably verified that only the Final Degree Project (TFG) remains and a maximum of 9 credits to obtain the Bachelor's degree.

Additionally, holders of degrees issued by education systems outside the EHEA shall also be eligible to apply without having to get official recognition by the Spanish authorities of their degree certificates, subject to verification by the UPM that their qualifications attest to an educational level equivalent to the respective Spanish accredited university degrees and that their holders are eligible in the degree-issuing country for admission to postgraduate programmes. Eligibility according to this procedure shall in no case imply official recognition of the previous degree held by the applicant or its recognition for purposes other than admission to the MSc programme.

Admission to Accredited MSc Programmes

Students shall be admitted to a MSc programme according to the requirements and merit rating criteria that are specific to the accredited MSc programme or established by the UPM. These requirements may include specified previous training in particular disciplines or a minimum language proficiency level.

MSc Programmes with Professional Certification

The higher education system provides for degree programmes that qualify graduates for admission to or the exercise of regulated professional activities in Spain. The conditions to be met by the curricula of such programmes are established by the Government to guarantee that the degrees certify that the holder is in possession of the proper competences and knowledge to exercise the profession (Royal Decree 967/2014 Appendix I).

NB: Documents issued in a language other than Spanish or English (UPM working languages) shall have to be duly translated before submission.

Eligibility requirements for Appendix I MSc programmes:

Regular MSc Programmes

Any programmes that do not have qualify students to exercise a regulated profession in Spain.

Eligibility requirements for regular MSc programmes (not listed in Appendix I):

  • Accredited university degree certificate issued by Spain, European Union member states or European Economic Area Agreement signatories or proof of having applied for the aforesaid certificate.
  • Duly legalized higher education degree issued by other education systems. This is an alternative procedure to official recognition, whereby the issuing country accredits that the degree is valid and has been issued by the competent authority. Generally, it is identified by the Hague Convention Apostille, See here for a list of Convention signatories.

 

 

The duration is established according to Royal Decree 1393/2007 (amended by Royal Decree 861/2010), repealed by the Royal Decree 822/2021, organizing accredited higher education programmes. Article 17 Guidelines for the design of MSc degree programmes reads:

1. The curricula required to earn a MSc degree shall have from 60, 90 or 120 ECTS, covering all the theoretical and practical training to be gained by the student: compulsory and optional subjects, seminars, external practicum, supervised papers, master's thesis, assessment activities, and any others that are necessary subject to the specific characteristics of each degree programme.

60 ETCS are equivalent to one academic year.

 

 

When they enrol, all students shall have to submit for validation the originals of the documents uploaded during the application process, that is, the documents issued by the degree-awarding institution.

* Hague Convention Apostille or stamp of the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in the degree-issuing country.

  • Documents issued in a language other than Spanish or English (UPM working languages) shall have to be duly translated before submission.

 

 

Official Recognition/Homologation and Legalization are two procedures employed for different legal purposes.

Official Recognition or Homologation

Procedure according to which the Spanish Ministry of Universities equates a degree issued by abroad with its respective Spanish degree, especially for the purposes of the exercise of a profession.

Real Decreto 889/2022, conditions and procedures for recognition, declaration of equivalence and validation of university education from foreign educational systems.

Legalization

Legalization is an administrative act whereby a foreign public document is validated, by verifying the authenticity of the signature on the document, and the capacity in which the signatory of the document has acted.

Generally implemented by means of the Hague Convention Apostille (click here for the signatory countries), the authorities of the certificate-issuing country accredit that it is a valid degree certificate and has been issued by the competent authority. 

For non-signatory countries of the Apostille of the Hague or Andrés Bello Agreement, diploma and records can be legalized by the stamp of the Embassies and Consulates of Spain in the country of issue of your diploma that certifies it is an official university degree. Documents issued in a language other than English or Spanish (UPM working languages) must be duly translated before submission.

Sworn translation (public, official or certified translation) is the translation of official documents by a sworn translator recognized by an official body for this purpose.

 

 

Universidad of Spanish universities

For students from Spanish universities, the UPM Enrollment Regulations allow them to request conditional application (In no case can the Master's degree be obtained without having previously completed the Bachelor's degree) by attaching a Student Pledge for Completion of Studies, on the date indicated in the Calendar, and an Official Transcript of records of your degree stating the credits passed, the credits necessary for your Bachelor's degree, and it can be reliably verified that only the Final Degree Project (TFG) remains and a maximum of 9 credits to obtain the Bachelor's degree. Otherwise, admission will be cancelled.

Students from other universities

During the first application period, they can apply without having completed their degree programme submitting a Student Pledge for Completion of Studies in place of their degree certificate. They should then submit all the required documents (degree certificate and official transcript of records) to tramitacion.master.oficial@upm.es according to the established schedule. Otherwise, admission will be cancelled.

 

 

The official higher education tuition fees for postgraduate programmes at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid are established annually by Decree issued by Madrid's Regional Government within the limits established by the University Coordinating Council.

Fees vary depending on whether or not the programme is a MSc degree with professional certification (Appendix I). Students should take this point into account when consulting the prices schedule.

NB: Please carefully read the document through to the end to learn about the conditions that apply to the fees for Appendix I MSc programmes or students from outside the European Higher Education Area.

 

 

Conditional Admission is allowed under RD 822/2021 and its transposition in the UPM Admission Regulations, which indicates "...it can be reliably verified that only the Final Degree Project (TFG) remains and a maximum of 9 credits to obtain the Bachelor's degree...".

This Conditional Admission allows undergraduate students from Spanish universities to enroll in a master's program, justifying the mentioned requirement (TFG + 9 ECTS maximum), before the dates indicated in the Calendar. Otherwise, admission would be canceled.

Also, both RD 822/2021, and its transposition in the UPM Enrollment Regulations, clearly specify that students with Conditional Admission may in no case be evaluated for the Final Master's Project (TFM) without having previously accredited obtaining the Bachelor Degree that conditioned its admission.

ECTS is the acronym for European Credit Transfer System which is the standard adopted by all European Higher Education Area (EHEA) higher education institutions to guarantee the standardization and quality of the educational programmes that they offer.

ECTS is a system designed to make it easier for students to move between different countries since the credits are based on the learning outcomes and course workload. The ECTS system also helps with and clarifies the planning, delivery and evaluation of educational programmes.

European Union, European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) 

According to Article 4, Credit transfer, of Royal Decree 1125/2003, establishing the European Credit Transfer System and grading system for official university qualifications valid throughout Spain:

1. Curriculums establish that students must earn a total 60 credits per academic year...

3. The credits allocated to each of the subjects of which the curriculum is composed shall account for the number work hours required by students to learn the respective subject matter, capabilities and skills. This allocation shall include the hours spent on theoretical or practical lectures, independent study, seminars, papers, practical assignments or projects and preparation for and sitting of examinations and assessment tests...

5. The minimum and maximum number of hours per credit shall be 25 and 30, respectively...

 

 

Higher educational programmes in Spain are divided into accredited and non-accredited programmes.

  • Accredited degrees (BSc, MSc and PhD) and non-accredited degrees (master's, specialization, expert and continuing training) are endorsed by the issuing university. The difference between the two is that accredited degrees are also recognized by the State and included in the Registro de Universidades, Centros y Títulos (RUCT). This authentication process guarantees their quality. On the other hand, non-accredited programmes are designed internally by universities according to their bylaws to address training needs not covered in the official catalogue of accredited degrees.
  • The UPM's accredited MSc programmes are regulated by Madri+d, the Madrid Region Certification and Accreditation Agency for higher education assessment. They are, therefore, recognized by all members states of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The non-accredited programmes are approved by the university's Governing Council and are not subject to the same regulatory criteria as accredited programmes.
  • Holders of accredited MSc degrees are eligible for admission to PhD Programmes, holders of non-accredited degrees are not. Both are postgraduate programmes offering high-quality, very specialized programmes. Generally speaking, accredited MSc degree programmes focus more on research (are taught by university lecturers), whereas non-accredited programmes target professional education (possibly with the participation of external professionals).
  • Holders of accredited MSc degrees are awarded points for postgraduate training in public administration competitive or internal promotion examinations, at least in Spain, whereas the points awarded for non-accredited programmes are usually classed as continuing education. However, this may depending on the competitive or internal promotion examination in question. They both have the same status in the business world.
  • Accredited MSc degrees are priced officially by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and Madrid Regional Government, whereas each institution establishes the price of their non-accredited degrees as the programmes are self-financing. Students of accredited MSc degrees are eligible for general Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities scholarships, whereas non-accredited programmes usually offer some sort of financial assistance or funding.

The implementation of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), also known as the Bologna Process, led to the adaptation of European higher education systems with a view to building coherence and strengthening their quality assurance mechanisms. The main aim for all these countries is to increase the mobility of staff and students and improve employability.

The equivalence between the new degree and former degree programmes is shown below.

 

 

A regulated profession in Spain is a profession that can only be exercised subject to particular conditions laid down by law or legislative rule. The conditions are usually holdership of an accredited degree.

Regulations stipulating the requirements for the verification of accredited degrees taught by the UPM qualifying holders to exercise a profession are:

(*) Note: For these purposes, the stay authorization granted to foreign students in accordance with Real Decreto 557/2011, of April 20, which approves the Regulation of Ley Orgánica 4/2000, of January 11, on "Rights and Freedoms of Foreigners in Spain and their Social Integration" will not be equivalent to the consideration of residents.



To be able to access any master's degree listed in Appendix I, it is necessary a Level B2 English language proficiency certificate, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Except for the Master's Degree in Teacher Training, which will require accreditation a Level B1 in any foreign language.

 

 

As the average grade is important for selecting postgraduate candidates in the higher education system, the Spanish Ministery of Universities has a service for calculating the equivalence of average grades for higher education programmes completed outside Spain.

This service has also developed equivalences tables of average university course and degree grades (Anexo II. Tablas de equivalencias por países) in order to convert the average grade to the Spanish university grading scale (0-10).

 

 

Erasmus Mundus is a European Union programme, approved in the year 2003, whose aim is to improve the quality of European higher education and cooperation with other regions in order to attract highly qualified students from third countries to courses organized jointly by European universities and thus strengthen their relations with similar institutions all over the world.
